When I heard this quote, I was shocked. I know to many it maybe like so what? But I think its a really thoughtful and just plain nice quote.

The quote:

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”

I heard this quote believe it or not in a movie (Hitch). I must say that was a very good movie in deed, one of the best movies staring Will Smith next to another favorite movie of Will which is (In Pursuit of Happiness). Couple of my other favorite quotes are:

“Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.” Albert Einstein

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Isaac Newton

Both of these quotes are awesome as well but I must still stick with the first quote.

In Toronto…

I’ve lived in Toronto for about 13 years. I moved to BC on August 27th, 2005 and my goal was to visit Toronto at least twice a year. This time around however didn’t return home for one year. I must say, having moved to Vancouver sure does put a new perspective on living in Toronto. Hmmm…. honestly I really have so much to say but can’t seem to articulate it into words so going to leave this comparison bit to a later post.

I shall get into how my Toronto trip is for now: so far is has been so so, having no car here really sucks. Last year I had a car so pretty much drove around as I pleased. This time I stay most of the days at home on the net and just chill and relax as what I intended to do on this trip anyways. I met with a couple of my friends and actually managed to go camping for a weekend as well. How the camping happened was quite so wrong. I was waiting for my brother to cut his hair and had been telling my friends I wont’ be coming camping cause I want to spend most of the time with the family etc and by coming camping it would take too many days away from the family. These guys had other plans, while I was waiting for my brother to cut his hair, they somehow convinced me on coming and litterly came and picked me up from the barber salon which left me with only the clothes on my back for the next few days. I did make them stop on the way at walmart to pick up a few change of clothes and some runners etc. The camp was AWESOME, I must say it was much better than I had anticipated. Played quite a few sports and actually found out that cricket can be fun only when batting though hehehe.

Hmmm what else did I accomplish while here in Toronto… basically hanged out with a few of my friends and had tons of fun. I also hung out with my brother and he took me to quite a few salsa places and learned salsa. Anyways shall update later on.

So far on a rating Toronto visit is 6/10.

libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 on Ubuntu

If you get like this error on Ubuntu,

error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

it means the library isn’t available and you need to install it. The following command will get rid of it. I came across this error when trying to install vertias backup client on ubuntu.

sudo apt-get install libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2

Stressful Week….

This week has been quite stressful. Having two members short in my team at work has really taken some toll. Somehow, I seem to be managing it so, but at what cost? Its one thing to get things done, but its another to risk healthy state of a mind and over work it. Basically, this week probably totaled double the number of hours I normally work. I suspect that is common in the industry at times. Hopefully next week will be a bit more relaxed. Somehow I doubt it…

Today, I finished work around 8 pm. What do I do when I get home you think? Go straight on my laptop to finish off the subversion portion that I was doing. Why? So from 4 Pm to 7:30 Pm, my self and a co-worker had to be on a service call to get this newly purchased Storage Area Network (SAN) to work with Red Hat AS4. We followed specs line by line. After much debugging we were yet again left with no solution. While on these service calls, much time is spent waiting for the representative to find solutions. I hate to waste time doing nothing, being the multitasker that I am, I started to work on some test cases for the subversion project. While I was doing that, it was abruptly ended when the service call ended (with no solution of course). So having started something, another pet peeve of mine is to leave things unfinished. So had to get home and finish this up. Basically it was yet another test case for creating repositories.

Ok, I’ve been on the computer far to long. Must get sleep. I thought I’d update on what I’ve been doing for the week. Of course there are more but shall keep this short cause my eyes are almost falling down as I type this.

Finally setup Dynamic DNS at home.

After quite some time, got fed up with the fact that shaw kept changing my IP. This meant that on my work machine where I set this “home IP” to have ssh/etc access will fail every time shaw desides to change my IP. So what I set up is a dynamic dns using a free account with http://dyndns.org. This is a feature that comes with my router where if my ip changes it will update with this dns site of my new ip. Thus this company will give me a domain name aka. thusi02.homeip.net (or something like that) which resolves to my routers IP. Now my machine at work recognizes this domain as the correct ip and accept any connections from my machine at home. Yep this is pretty cool :).

What else for the tech side… Oh I have just downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 and am planning on installing it on a spare machine to host a CS server. We’ll see how that goes.

On another note… Just completed a functional template for one of my website design clients: http://vbullprecision.com/new/ Pretty simple design using flash. Which means that I have figured out how to use Flash MX 2004 from my previous post about not being able to figure out how to use Flash MX 2004.

Now its time to workout

This is the feature that I woud like to implement into the subversion project. Thought I’d put out the code that makes this drag and drop feature. This is thanks to script.aculo.us. In order to make this work, you need to download the scrip.aculo.us code from: http://script.aculo.us/downloads. The following is the code that allows items to be dropped into a box.

Subversion Project

Working on this subversion project for work. Essentially what it does is it requests what repositories the users want ( lecturers/professors) and goes out and puts then into a database. Then a cron job runs and picks out the requested repositories and creates them with appropriate rights. Don’t want to give away too much of the design specs as it could compromise the security of the application (possibly). Anyhow, a unique feature that I thought would be fun for this application is to enable a drag and drop feature. Basically this eliminates users from typing in a users name for appropriate repository rights, instead they can just drag/drop the students from the appropriate class into the box. Now I have to think to myself… Am I complicating this application more then in needs, or will this be a good feature that could be used by the end users. A programmer/developer/designer must always put their self’s in the shoes of the user. Most times we are blinded by the “features/gimmicks” that we can put forward to the user and make a “simple” application much more complicated then needed. For now I have completed the functionality of the subversion project and we shall see what I wake up to tomorrow about going forth with the ajax component.

Flash Object Tip.

I thought I’d put some quick tech tips for myself and anyone else that is looking for help. I do have most of this hosted on http://letstalkcoding.com however thought, putting it in a blog would make sense as it would consolidate all my information into one bundle of joy ;). Also wasn’t too sure of the category to put this under since its going to be a mix of all things so decided to call it “Tech Tips”. So the tip for today:

Embedding Flash into HTML. This is quite the easy task, however some use javascript to embed it and others use the HTML object ID. I personally use the HTML Object ID as it gets around a known problem. The problem is that if you have any div’s etc that hover over the flash object it will not be seen as the flash will have the highest Z index. Thus putting the following param into the html object tag resolves the problem. Here is the param that needs to be included to enable flash’s z-index to be below other divs. This works for both Mozilla and IE. The following is the entire code to enable flash on a page.

Soo… Don’t know really what to put in a blog yet… So going to keep this blog a “personal” goals/accomplishments/just day to day stuff. So what did I accomplish today: I must say been trying to learn this Flash MX 2004 is tougher then I thought. I purchased a template from templatemonster.com to customize for a client. I knew how to do some flash using flash 5 back in the days and currently do some flash work (if needed) using Swish. So thought “Hey how hard could it be…”, it seems harder then I thought. Currently just modifying the menu and having a hard time just adding a new link (I am suppose to be a techy HA HA). Is knowing flash considered a techy though? Currently however, the clients are requiring more and more fancier and flashier pages so it does help to know it. Its like VB: Does knowing Visual Basics make you a programmer? (I don’t think so, but one can argue against that).

On a more happy thought, I went for a jog today and feel quite refreshed. So time to get to this Flash MX 2004 and trying to create a new link in this menu bar ( wish me luck indeed ). I shall try to update this blog everyday with my daily accomplishments.

Entertainment for today: House MD, I just recently got addicted to this show as it is QUITE interesting. So the show is about differential diagnostics of patients that have extreme cases of course. After all this is a show that they are trying to get people interested in and by putting normal cases it won’t be as attractive as say… hmmm a person who got bit by a dog and is about to die in a couple of mins… what could have caused it? The Answer: Basically the dog had quite a bit of bacteria in its mouth, since dogs have the ability to fight this off naturally and we don’t it causes an infection and spreads quite rapidly. Of course there was a whole bit of drama on this but I’ll leave that out of this.

Blogger B-Day

I had installed wordpress before but didn’t quite pay attention to it. The main reason being the amount of spam that was getting into it. I was merely lazy to get to it to prevent the spam. Finally got out of the clutter of work and managed to reinstall and setup spam filters on this wordpress. Time to start blogging my day to day activities to keep my memory/memories sharp.
